THE MAGIC OF THE YI JING

Within Taoist magic, each hexagram of the Yi Jing (易经), “the classic of changes,” has a magical application. For most people, the Yi Jing is nothing more than a divinatory method. This is because at the most basic level of understanding, each hexagram is like a mirror of the subconscious that reflects the probable tendencies of the individual consulting the diviner. It is called Yi Jing (易经), “the classic of changes,” emphasizing the fundamental concept of change and transformation that is central to the philosophy and divination associated with the Yi Jing (易经). But in Taoist magic, change is also related to an energetic order and a position in time and space. On a deeper level, the hexagram is not just a mirror; it is also like a magnet that attracts vibrations attuned to it. In this way, it reflects and radiates, the two indispensable actions for an object to have magical properties. Like a mirror, it is capable of reflecting more subtle and powerful energies.

For example, the first hexagram (qian) represents Yang energy at its maximum power. In time, it is the double hour between 11 am and 1 pm. In space, it is the south direction. This time-space conjunction announces the hour of the maximum power of Yang energy. Each day at the designated hour, it is possible to invoke the five guardian spirits of that time-space. The Great Duke of Metal Horse (Geng Wu), a punitive deity, the Great Duke of Water Horse (Ren Wu), a stagnation deity, the Great Duke of Wood Horse (Jia Wu), a prosperity deity, the Great Duke of Fire Horse (Bing Wu), a just deity, and the Great Duke of Earth Horse (Wu Wu), a prosperity deity. If a person requires the assistance of any of these five dukes, they should burn pine needles within a circle facing south, at noon. Then, while reciting the prayer, they must trace the talismanic symbol of the hexagram (qian). This ritual attracts Yang energy, meaning that the manifestation will come in the form of a man or empower a man. It may attract a man who imparts notions of justice or prosperity depending on the case. Or a man may empower himself to achieve justice or prosperity. In all cases, the male figure will prevail. Since ancient times, this talisman has been used for sexual potency and fertility. Women seeking men also made use of this talisman. In witchcraft, this talisman is used to invoke the masculine forces of creation and destruction.
