SOUTHERN KUNG FU

The southern kung fu taught at the Hun Yuan Pai school, transmitted by Sifu Siuk Siu Fu (粟小虎), also known as William Siuk, has its roots in the Shaolin Temple of Fujian (莆田南少林寺). The temple was destroyed during the Qing dynasty (大清) from 1644 to 1912. This happened because Buddhist monks had allied with the “Rebels” (反贼) of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom (太平天国) in order to overthrow the Qing dynasty (大清). According to old records from the year 1860, the Buddha Fist (佛家拳) began to gain popularity in Guangdong province, specifically in Doumen District (斗门区), in the villages of Lishan (荔山村) and Hushan (虎山村), under the guidance of lay master Lei Wa Bao (李华保), who was a student of the Shaolin monk named Yik Ga Hoi (益加海).
According to Sifu Rodoldo Polich, once the survivors of the temple’s destruction began teaching Shaolin kung fu, it spread mainly in the provinces of Fujian and Guangdong. As Sifu Polich was told, the original Buddha Fist (
佛家拳) consisted only of four main techniques: Luo Han Kuen (羅漢拳) – Monk Fist, Gim Gong Kuen (金剛拳) – Buddha Warrior Fist, Ju Lai San Jong (如來神掌) – Buddha Palm, and Goon Yam Kuen (觀音拳) – Bodhisattva Fist. But as it spread in both Fujian and Guangdong, the system blended with other local techniques. Before the destruction of the southern Shaolin temple in Fujian, there were 60 martial arts schools native to that province, and in Guangdong, there were at least 54 indigenous martial arts schools. Shaolin kung fu was quickly absorbed by the local martial arts practitioners. The surviving Shaolin kung fu today is heavily influenced by martial traditions from both Fujian and Guangdong. From the original four forms, Sifu Siuk Siu Fu’s (粟小虎) branch of the Buddha Fist (佛家拳) includes the following techniques: Ng Ying Kuen (五形拳) – “Five Animals Fist”, Ng Hang Kuen (五行拳) – “Five Elements Fist”, Zeoi Lo Hon Kuen (醉罗汉拳) – “Drunken Monk Fist”, Se Hok Soeng Ying Kuen (蛇鹤双形拳) – “Combined Snake and Crane Fist” (commonly known as Wing Chun), Si Zi Kuen (狮子拳) – “Lion Fist”, Hau Jing Kuen (猴形拳) – “Monkey Fist”, and Fung Ngoon Kuen (凤眼拳) and “Phoenix Eye Fist”.
